Carlos Duarte is a world leader in multiple fields of oceanography, marine biology, and ecology. He served as an associate professor at the Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) in Barcelona (1989–1990) and at the Blanes Center for Advanced Studies (1990–1998), and later as a research professor at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (CSIC–University of the Balearic Islands) from 1999 to 2014.He organized and led the Malaspina Circumnavigation Expedition to assess the state of the global ocean.
He has also worked with the Oceans Institute at the University of Western Australia researching coral reefs, and directed the Red Sea Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.Currently, Duarte co-leads, together with researcher Susana Agustí, an international study that outlines the essential roadmap of actions needed for marine life to recover its abundance by 2050.
