Biological oceanographer

Speaker

Susana Agustí

Professor of Marine Sciences at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia (KAUST)

Professor Agustí is a biological oceanographer. Her research focuses on the ecology of photosynthetic plankton and the metabolic balance of the oceans

Susana Agustí is Professor of Marine Science at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia (KAUST). She was previously a Professor at the University of Western Australia, and Research Professor with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) in Majorca. Her research work has made a major contribution to our understanding of regulation of the abundance, diversity and production of microalgae in the ocean, and the effect of disruptions such as climate change and pollution on plankton organisms.

Susana Agustí has also published more than 230 scientific papers, and recently co-authored one of the most influential articles describing a strategy to restore abundance of life to the oceans, which was published in “Nature” magazine in 2020. She has led oceanographic expeditions in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean and in both polar oceans, the Antarctic and the Arctic. She is currently studying the Red Sea and the combined effects of stress factors there, and the adaptation of its organisms to global change.
