A PhD in Economics, Sebastián Villasante is one of Spain's leading experts on oceanic sustainability and fishery management.

Sebastián Villasante (PhD in Economics) is a leading economist working in oceanic equality, fishery management and oceanic sustainability, with more than a decade of empirical work experience in coastal systems. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and a Karl-Göran Mäler intern at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics (Sweden). He heads up the interdisciplinary science on local and global scales, and has authored over 190 scientific papers. 

Scientific coordinator on the EQUALSEA project, Villasante has been guest speaker at the Convention on Biological Diversity, the European Court of Auditors, the European Parliament, the IPBES Platform and the United Nations. He also founded the ICES Working Group on Resilience and Marine Ecosystem Services, the PECS Working Group on Oceanic Equality, and is also co-founder of Alimentta, a Spanish think tank to roll out transitions towards sustainable foodstuff systems
