Juan Luis Gómez Pinchetti

Scientific director and head of the Biotechnology and Cultivation Unit, Spanish Algae Bank

Gómez-Pinchetti has wide experience in lab-scale and pilot-scale cultivation of macroalgae, microalgae and marine cyanobacteria.

A lecturer in the Biology Department, Sea Sciences Faculty, and Researcher with the Spanish Algae Bank (BEA) and the Oceanography and Global Change Institute (IOCAG) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, his line of work concerns the physiology, cultivation and biotechnical possibilities of algae (macroalgae and microalgae) from an applied standpoint. 

Since 2012 he has been Scientific Director of the BEA’s Biotechnology Unit, a leading centre for the cultivation of macroalgae, microalgae and cyanobacteria on both lab scale and as pilot projects.

BEA’s objectives include the study of physiological and biochemical processes relating to intensive algae cultivation, transformation and possible industrial applications of the biomass produced (biotechnological assessment of biodiversity).
