Marine biologist
Speaker
Jesús Arrieta
Scientist at the Canary Islands' Oceanographic centre IEO-CSIC (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain)

Microbial ecology is this Spanish scientist's research field.
Jesús M. Arrieta holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and has conducted research into the diversity and function of marine microbes at several institutions, such as the University of Vienna, the Netherlands' Royal Marine Research Institute, the Mediterranean Advanced Studies Institute (IMEDEA) and the Red Sea Research Center at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
His research interests focus on microbial ecology, the role of microbes in the functioning of the biosphere, and climate regulation. He has worked on several issues such as deep-ocean carbon storage, microbe ocean transportation, and the utilisation of marine genetic resources. With reference to this talk, he led the first world survey on the utilisation of marine genetic resources, and isolated a collection of Malaspina Expedition microbes which were used to make cosmetic products.
