Santiago Hernández León is a Professor of Zoology and the Director of the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (IOCAG) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. With an extensive scientific career, he has dedicated his work to studying the ocean’s role in climate regulation and carbon sequestration.

Holding a PhD in Biological Sciences, he has participated in over forty research projects—leading twenty of them—and has published more than 150 scientific articles. His experience includes over forty oceanographic expeditions, eight of them in polar regions such as the Arctic and Antarctica.

His research focuses on the “biological carbon pump” and the processes through which the ocean captures and stores CO2, helping to mitigate climate change. He is currently working on developing technologies to enhance the ocean’s capacity to remove carbon dioxide, providing key solutions for the planet’s future.
