Carloforte and traditional tuna fishing

Tuna are caught in Carloforte with nets, with a technique already used in Sardinia by the Phoenicians and the Romans, and perfected in the 15th century by the Spanish.

The Carloforte Tonnara method is the only procedure of its kind nowadays in the Mediterranean, and the mattanza is a genuine strategic ritual carried out between April and June.

Tuna in this region is much appreciated for its flesh, rich in nutrients with a pleasant, delicate flavour, attracting the interest of chefs all over the world.
