Seagrass beds as natural capital
An analysis of the ecological and economic value of seagrass meadows. Their key role in climate change mitigation and ocean health is explored.
The presentation will examine seagrass meadows as a fundamental natural capital for marine ecosystems and society. It will analyze how these macrophyte-dominated habitats contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, their resilience to human and environmental pressures, and the critical points that could compromise their recovery. Based on this knowledge, strategies for the sustainable conservation and management of these ecosystems will be discussed, highlighting their importance for biodiversity, coastal stability, and the development of science-based marine conservation policies.
