Ecosystems that provide sustenance: Portugal and Africa as examples of natural capital

Along the Atlantic coasts of Portugal and West Africa, underwater 'forests' act as blue natural capital, supporting fisheries, protecting coastlines, and promoting biodiversity. This talk will invite us to discover their ecological and social value, as well as the importance of protecting them.

Along the Atlantic coasts, from Portugal to West Africa, underwater “forests” serve as a vital form of blue natural capital, supporting fisheries, protecting coastlines, storing carbon, and promoting extraordinary biodiversity. Composed of macroalgae, seagrass meadows, and reef-building organisms, these underwater ecosystems are highly productive and crucial for ecological balance.

In this talk, we will explore these hidden underwater forests, with significant ecological and social value, from the coasts of Portugal to the pristine beaches of Mauritania and the tropical Bijagós Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau. Through key research findings and underwater video footage, we will dive into these remarkable ecosystems and discuss why understanding and protecting marine forests is essential for both nature and human communities.
